Skills Training
The Skills Training division empowers learners to develop practical, creative, and vocational skills that promote independence, confidence, and meaningful participation in the community. It combines three complementary spaces — the Skill Studio, Kitchen and Workshop — offering learners opportunities to explore creativity, build hands-on skills, and gain real-world experience in a supportive environment.
Who we serve
Skills Training serves learners with diverse abilities who are ready to explore practical, creative, and vocational learning opportunities. Learners may have a wide range of academic and functional abilities, and programmes are tailored through a learner-centred approach that supports individual strengths, interests, developmental needs, and meaningful participation.
Skills Training is implemented across the centre at varying levels of difficulty and participation to support functional and vocational development in an inclusive and supportive environment. Through hands-on, project-based activities, learners are encouraged to build practical skills, confidence, independence, and real-world experience.

Programme Focus & Learning Approach
Skill Studio
The Skill Studio focuses on creative and practical skills that develop fine motor coordination, problem-solving, and self-expression. Learners engage in activities such as crafts, needlework and other hands-on projects. These experiences foster creativity, confidence, and practical skills that complement academic learning and provide early exposure to vocational activities.

Skill Workshop
The Skill Workshop emphasises structured, task-oriented skill development through practical projects such as woodworking, gardening, and other trade-based activities. Learners develop
hands-on abilities, technical skills, responsibility, and an understanding of production processes within a safe and guided environment. For safety reasons, woodworking items are pre-cut, with learners participating in the sanding and assembly process. These activities build confidence and prepare learners for meaningful engagement in real-world tasks.

Skill Kitchen
The Skill Kitchen focuses on functional cooking and baking skills that can be used in everyday life — from preparing meals for oneself or one’s family to baking goods that can be sold.
This is often one of the most loved Skill Spaces among our learners, as the final product is usually enjoyed together afterwards! These hands-on cooking and baking projects help build confidence in the kitchen while encouraging creativity, independence, and teamwork in a fun and engaging environment.

Support Structure
Skills Training classes maintain small group sizes to ensure learners receive personalised guidance and support. Facilitators and instructors work closely with each learner, providing supervision, encouragement, and step-by-step instruction tailored to individual abilities.
Both the Skill Studio and Skill Workshop operate under a structured, safe environment where learners can explore, create, and practice new skills with confidence. Additional support staff are available as needed, ensuring that all learners can participate fully and safely.
Applied Learning & Enrichment Opportunities
Learners in the Skills Training division benefit from a variety of opportunities that extend learning beyond structured sessions:
-
Participation in real-world projects such as producing items for the Skill Shop, giving learners practical experience and a sense of accomplishment.
-
Creative and hands-on activities in the Skill Studio and Skill Workshop that build problem-solving, fine motor skills, and confidence.
-
Collaboration and teamwork, fostering social interaction, communication, and pride in shared achievements.
-
Exposure to practical skills and micro-enterprise opportunities, supporting independence and engagement with the wider community.
Outcomes & Impact
Learners in Skills Training develop practical, creative, and vocational skills that promote independence, confidence, and self-motivation. Through participation in the Skill Studio, Skill Kitchen and Skill Workshop, learners gain hands-on experience, improve fine motor and problem-solving abilities, and build both creative and technical competencies.
Skills Training prepares learners for meaningful engagement in the wider community and, for some, micro-enterprise participation through the Skill Shop. Beyond skill acquisition, learners also develop social interaction, collaboration, and a sense of pride in producing tangible results.
